While most people associate CERT with hurricane response and search-and-rescue, Hazardous Materials Awareness is a critical, yet often under-discussed, pillar of community safety. In a rural and developing landscape like Wimauma, FL, understanding the risks around us is the first step toward effective disaster mitigation.
Why HazMat Awareness Matters in Wimauma
Wimauma is a unique intersection of residential growth, industrial transport, and large-scale agriculture. Our community faces specific risks that require a vigilant and trained eye:
- Agricultural Chemicals: Storage and transport of fertilizers and pesticides are essential to our local farming economy.
- Transport Routes: The movement of industrial materials along major corridors like US-301 and SR-674.

The CERT Role: Recognize and Report
Important: CERT volunteers are not HazMat technicians. We do not mitigate or "clean up" spills. Instead, our specialized training focuses on the "Recognize and Report" protocol:
- Identification: Using the DOT North American Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG) to identify placards and labels from a safe distance.
- Isolation: Establishing a safe perimeter to keep neighbors away from a potential "Hot Zone."
- Communication: Providing precise, technical information to professional Fire-Rescue and HazMat teams to speed up their response.
